2 What is Oppression? “Opprimere” = Latin for “pressed down”
Social inequality Pervasive/ingrained Often systemic/institutionalized Can be applied to/by individuals (Connor et al )

3 What is Genocide? “Genocide” = “Geno” (‘race’ in Greek) + “Cide” (‘killing’ in Latin) Act of intent to exterminate Various groups can be targeted National Ethnic Racial Religious Etc. (Connor et al )

4 UN Definition of Genocide
The following is the legal definition of genocide by the standards of the United Nations. It is in Article 2 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948). “…any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group, as such: Killing members of the group Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group (“OSAPG Analysis Framework”)

8 Dominoes… Stereotypes: False or generalized ideas of a group of people. Ex) Video gamers don’t read. Prejudice: The idea that someone different (or a certain demographic) is inferior. Lacks evidence. Ex) Video gamers are dumb because they don’t read. Discrimination: An oppressive action due to prejudice. Ex) I don’t talk to video gamers because I’m smart and want to have sophisticated conversations. (Connor et al ) (“26. Nothing Happens Suddenly”)
