1 PEMDAS and Simplifying
By Cole Funk

2 PEMDAS PEMDAS is an acronym that tells you what order to follow when doing mathematical operations Parentheses: if there are parentheses, work inside those first Exponents: next, take care of any exponents Multiplication and Division: before adding and subtracting, multiply and divide Addition and Subtraction: Last, add and subtract Please excuse my dear aunt Sally

3 Let’s Practice! 7(13 - 8) 24 - (32 + 1) 2(30 – ( )) (2(3+4)2 + 4)) – 4x7 + 42 9n – 2(n + 5) +3 n

4 Get rid of as many parentheses as possible Combine like terms
Rules for simplifying Get rid of as many parentheses as possible Combine like terms Order is standard form

5 2(x + 4) + 3(x – 5) - 2y 2x(x – 3) + 6(32) – 2(2 – x)
Let’s Practice! 2(x + 4) + 3(x – 5) - 2y 2x(x – 3) + 6(32) – 2(2 – x) (3x)2 - 16x + x(x – 2)
