7 Hook Options for a hook include: A famous quote
The Purpose of the Hook: A hook is the first one or two lines of the essay and serves to catch the reader's attention and pique his interest. Options for a hook include: A famous quote A shocking fact or statistic A rhetorical question. Examples Quote: "A man's errors are his portals of discovery." Fact: Many studies show that the biological sleep pattern for teens shifts a few hours, which means teens naturally stay up later and feel alert later in the morning. Statistic: According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, teens and young adults experience the highest rates of violent crime. Rhetorical Question: How much longer will this injustice continue?

8 THESIS STATEMENT The Thesis Statement:
states your position on the topic sets up the structure for the paper. Remember: You can only choose ONE SIDE to argue! You must stick with that side throughout the entire essay!!

9 Support your Thesis with Two to Three Reasons.
You must include your two to three main reasons that support your belief within your thesis statement, or in the sentence following your thesis statement. The reasons that you give in your thesis statement are your arguments that will make up your body paragraphs. You must write them in the order they are listed in the introductory paragraph.

13 Introduction (Basic) Your introduction must include a hook, bridge, and thesis! Despite the American culture where the individual chooses the person they are going to marry based on love, there are still countries and cultures who believe in arranged marriages. In the articles “Arranged Marriage vs Love Marriage”, “To Love and Marry or Marry and Love”, and in Romeo and Juliet the controversy is addressed as to whether arranged marriage or a love marriage is more effective . Based on the evidence, arranged marriages are more effective than love marriages because they focus on shared personal interests and they promote family unity.

14 So What Information Should the Counterclaim Include?
First, look at the reasons that you listed to support your claim. Counterclaim Brainstorm Guide Reason 1: Objection to Reason 1: Why your claim is still stronger: Reason 2: Objection to Reason 2: Reason 3: Objection to Reason 3: Next, determine what objections others have to each of your reasons? Remember, your counterclaim is written in EACH body paragraph after you have explained what your evidence means and how it supports your claim.

1. Introduction: A. Hook Sentence B. Bridge (Introduce Sources) C. Thesis Sentence (Includes the writer’s position and REASONS) 2. A relevant topic sentence for each body paragraph 3. At least TWO pieces of evidence for each topic sentence. 4. The writer must explain/translate the evidence into their own words AND explain how it supports the argument. 5. A relevant counterclaim MUST be addressed in each body paragraph. 6. The conclusion should restate the argument. The writer can go further by restating topic sentences for additional support. 7. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar
