2 Step One- Time to Read & Gather
Read the prompt. Gather evidence while you read. Mark evidence for the yes side with a + and the no side with a - It is ok to underline and make notes as your read.

3 Step Two: Time to Outline
Make a quick outline to plan Your claim Reason 1 – Find Evidence record source and paragraph number Reason 2 - Find Evidence record source and paragraph number Counterclaim – what do other people think. Find evidence to prove them wrong.

4 Planning for Success You should have FIVE paragraphs Intro with claim
Body paragraph 1 – reason 1 Body paragraph 2 – reason 2 Counterclaim paragraph – be sure to prove them wrong Conclusion – restate the claim

5 Claim: Parents should not be held legally accountable for their children’s irresponsible actions when they misbehave. Reason #2: Reason #1: It is far too difficult to make the parent’s punishment fair, depending on the child’s age or severity of the crime. 6 Step Three: Time to Draft…
Include a clear claim in the introduction Include transitions to help your paper flow. Body paragraphs focus on one reason; support with evidence and most importantly, EXPLAIN Use evidence from multiple sources - Avoid overly relying on one source Address counterclaims & PROVE THEM WRONG Restate your claim in the conclusion

Transition & topic sentence T Evidence with citations E Explain the evidence – how does it relate to the topic E Evidence with citations E Sum it up S It is ok to have one piece of strong evidence as long as you really, really explain it.

8 Step four: Edit an Revise If there is time …
Check spelling and punctuation Re-read to make sure that it is clear where the quotes came from. Check those citations. Check word choice – you can make some subtle changes that can make your paper stronger Check for transitions at the beginning of paragraphs and inside the paragraph.

11 Let’s Look at the sample
Circle the transition and highlight the topic sentence. Box the citation – where the quote came from Highlight the evidence Using a second color, highlight the explaining Circle the sum it up sentence.

12 Time to reflect Did you have a topic sentence stating the reason? Yes or No Did you have clear citations? Yes or No Did you chose strong evidence? Yes or No Did you ADEQUATELY explain your evidence? Yes or No What did you do well? What will do you need to improve upon?
