2 Figure 1 E. tarda Uses Its T6SS to Suppress Inflammasome Activation Elicited by a T3SS The T3SS of E. tarda injects effectors that have been shown to be important for intracellular replication and cytotoxicity of macrophages (Zhang et al., 2016), although the working mechanisms of these effectors are not well characterized. Chen et al. (2017) demonstrate that the T3SS apparatus induces the activation of inflammasomes, the key regulators of pyroptosis. In order to suppress pyroptosis, the T6SS of E. tarda secretes the effector EvpP to inhibit the oligomerization of ASC. The suppression of inflammasome activation and pyroptosis is suggested to be beneficial to bacterial colonization in the host.
