Changing Rule for adding vowel suffixes

Vowel Y = long (e) & long (i) sounds
We have already learned the letter Y can be a consonant or a vowel. We know vowel Y can make the long (e) sound, as in the words … carry and hurry We know vowel Y can make the long (i) sound, as in the words….satisfy and multiply

Changing Rule We know that a SUFFIX is a VOWEL SUFFIX if the FIRST letter of the suffix is a vowel. -ing, -er, -ed When you add a vowel suffix to a base word with vowel Y in the final position, you must change the Y to i before adding the suffix unless the suffix begins with the letter i. Base Word: cry + ed = cried cry + ing = crying
