Communication and Professionalism: Comparing Standardized Video Interview Scores to Faculty Gestalt CLICK TO GO BACK TO KIOSK MENU Benjamin Schnapp, MD, Daniel Ritter, MD,  Aaron Kraut, MD, Sarah Fallon, BA,  Keeley Brown, BA, Mary Westergaard, MD Background Methods Results Conclusions Residency applicants to EM residencies submitted an average of 48.2 applications each in 2017, a 50% increase from five years ago. The AAMC has introduced the Standardized Video Interview (SVI) to assess the communication and professionalism skills of residency applicants to allow a more holistic view of individuals beyond academic performance. Initial data suggests scores are not correlated with academic competency and provide a new measure of applicant attributes. It is not currently known how the SVI compares to existing metrics for assessing communication and professionalism during the interview process. 82% (n=103) received a higher faculty gestalt score Poor correlation (r=0.11) between corrected SVI and faculty gestalt scores (p<0.001) No correlation (r=-0.01) between corrected SVI and interview scores Applicants were selected and interviewed without consideration of SVI scores. Faculty interviewers rated applicant communication skills and professionalism on 1-25 point scale. SVI scores were corrected to analogous 1-25 point scale. SVI scores have a poor correlation to faculty gestalt regarding communication skills and professionalism. There was no correlation between SVI scores and overall interview scores. SVI scores remain of unclear utility without correlation to resident performance. Programs should carefully consider how SVI scores are used until more is known. Corrected SVI Score Faculty Gestalt Score Interview Score Mean 14.6 17.9 6.7 SD 2.6 3.0 1.7 Limitations Small, single center study Interviewers were not blinded Interviewers received no specific training on the rating of applications Next Steps Purpose Further research is needed to determine whether SVI scores or faculty gestalt correlate with performance during residency. To determine whether SVI scores correlate to faculty evaluation of applicants’ communication skills and professionalism.
