1 Pain Management Through (Education) Research (and Mentoring) In Resource Limited Countries
Salahadin Abdi, MD, PhD Professor and Chairman Department of Pain Medicine H. Buchanan & SJ Seeger Endowed Research Professor The University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center

2 Mission: To eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation and the world
President John Kennedy’s famous speech, “We choose to go to the moon in this decade … because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.” Moon Shots Program The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Moon Shots Program is our ambitious, comprehensive action plan to end cancer/make cancer history. It’s inspired by America’s drive to put a man on the moon a generation ago. Ronald DePinho, MD, Former President, MDACC

No relevant financial disclosure - Board of Directors: American Soc. of Interventional Pain Physicians - Executive Board of the World Congress on Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and Techniques Objectives… To make the case for education & research Discuss our pain fellowship program Introduce a new pain fellowship program in Ethiopia C) discuss how research should/can be incorporated successfully at all levels of training To understand mentorship

4 Making The Case For High Quality Education and Research
Without research there is no progress! Pain Fellowship Program in the USA and Pain Fellowship Program in Ethiopia (soon to come)

5 Translational Research Through Partnership And Collaboration
How to do Research in Resource-Limited Countries The capacity to undertake research in resource-limited countries such as China, India and developing regions in Africa, are restricted more by fiscal input and availability of sophisticated facilities, rather than by resources such as disease presence, clinical data and human intelligence. In many countries, these latter resources exist in abundance at the local level and, if utilized wisely, can provide unique advantages to undertaking scientific research relative to resource rich countries. For example, Chinese clinicians are uniquely placed to design studies with an emphasis on translational medicine. In regard to undertaking translational research in 'resource-limited' countries, the routes of research translation could be considered to be either: from bench to bedside; from empirical to evidence based; or from bedside to bench and back to bedside.

6 Incorporating Research at Various Levels of Health Science Education & Practice
Summer internship in pain research for undergraduates (high school students). Establish MD/PhD Offer Research Pathway during Residency Start Fellowship research initiative (1 vs 2 years program) Support and guide (junior) Faculty Collaborative neuroscience regular seminars

7 Teach the 5 Phases of Research
1. Defining the problem and research objectives 2. Developing the research plan 3. Collect the information 4. Analyze the information 5. Present the findings

8 Making The Case For Mentorship

9 Roles of a Mentor Teacher and Role Model (Friend) Agent Networker
Counselor Mentee Mentors have many vital roles and responsibilities: life-long learners and mentees themselves.

10 Mentor-Mentee The ideal mentoring relationship is a “win-win” partnership. The mentoring process requires significant time and attention from both parties. If care is not taken, the process could lose its potential for success.

11 Conclusion High quality (pain) research training for undergraduates and graduates should be incorporated in high quality medical education. Institutional commitment to provide a supportive research environment with a rich infrastructure and funding is critical for a successful program.

12 THANK YOU
