2 Chapter 2 – Section 5 Guided Notes “Ratifying the Constitution”
Objectives: Know the opinions of the Federalists and Anti-Federalists Describe how the Constitution was ratified (approved) Name the first President and Vice President ** It was determined after finishing the new Constitution that 9 out of the 13 states had to vote in favor of the document for it to be implemented.

3 There were two main groups that had opinions about the Constitution:
Federalists – Supported the Constitution Anti-Federalists – Opposed the Constitution

4 Federalists Anti-Federalists
Famous People: James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay Viewpoints AOC was a weak document A new government would fix all problems Anti-Federalists Famous People: Patrick Henry, Richard Henry Lee, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams Viewpoints: Opposed ratification process Absence of the mention of God was wrong States lost too much power Wanted Bill of Rights

7 The Federalists wrote a series of essays and compiled them into a collection called the Federalist papers.

8 The strongest opposition to the document came from New York and Virginia
The document was officially ratified on June 21, 1788 when New Hampshire became the 9th state to vote in favor of the Constitution.

9 President – George Washington Vice President – John Adams
On April 6th, 1789 the results of the first Presidential election were tallied. President – George Washington Vice President – John Adams *At this time the Vice President was whoever finished in second place.
