2 The Chanak Crisis -1922 Chanak-Seaport on the Dardanelles strait; the international sea route that divides Europe and Asia Incident involved Britain and Turkey Earlier in the 1920s, military forces from Britain (and other nations) occupied large portions of western Turkey under the Treaty of Sevres British forces were stationed near Chanak

3 The Chanak Crisis -1922 15 of September, Britain sent a telegram asking the Dominions (including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) to donate soldiers to the crisis in a demonstration of the Empire’s unity against the Turks. Canada had no distinct foreign policy, not even a foreign affairs minister On 18 September, Prime Minister King's Cabinet agreed that only Parliament could decide such matters By the time Parliament could talk about the matter, the crisis in Turkey had passed In Canada, King’s separate attitude toward the crisis sent a message that he wanted greater independence for Canada in terms of its foreign policy.

Canada got separate diplomatic representation in Washington First Canadian legation was in Washington An arrangement for this had actually been made in Borden's time, but nothing happened 1927- Vincent Massey became the first Canadian representative to the US with full diplomatic status Legations opened in France Legations opened in Japan

1920s -the United States became Canadas biggest trading partner over Britain

6 Statute of Westminster
Canada's full independence may be said to date from the statute, on 11 December 1931
