1 The future energy mix – The case for Sizewell C

2 A diverse mix will deliver secure low carbon power
c15% Gas 40GW 40%, 35GW today c55% - 60% Renewables 80GW – 90GW 29%, 41GW today c % Nuclear 12-14GW 20%, 9GW today Energy efficiency Electrification of transport and heat Smarter systems Increased Interconnection

3 Backing up a wind lull with batteries would be extremely expensive
Dorenell Wind Farm 177MW, 0.1% of UK – 120,000 homes West Burton B Battery 49MW to fill a week-long wind lull 9GWh batteries X400 WBB batteries c.£200m* c.£5bn * Illustrative cost to build today

4 Moving beyond “first of a kind” paves the way for lowest cost nuclear
The key ingredients to deliver lowest cost nuclear power are: A GOOD SITE THE FLEET EFFECT REDUCTION IN COST OF CAPITAL

5 Site: Sizewell C enjoys a site close to centres of demand, next to an existing station with existing grid lines in place Moorside Wylfa Sizewell C Oldbury Bradwell B Hinkley Point C Population heat map

6 Fleet effect: Sizewell C will replicate the design of Hinkley Point C
Design cost savings Learnings in the supply chain Staff continuity Lower development costs Lower qualification costs Stable design

7 Cost of capital: The risk is lower with a “second of a kind” and a RAB based model could offer better value for money Risk Reduction Sizewell C will be 7th and 8th EPRs Four EPR will be operating before FID Experience from Hinkley Point C and supply chain continuity will be of great value to Sizewell C Financing Model The NAO and the PAC recommended an evolution to funding framework The Secretary of State recently announced a RAB style model would be considered Best value for money for customers can be achieved with some risk sharing

8 Benefits for the East of England
Sizewell C will be a catalyst for development of top-end engineering, construction and manufacturing across the region The East of England is the only region with the potential for two new nuclear projects UK businesses secured 64% of total construction spend on Hinkley Point C The Sizewell C project could create 1000 apprenticeships during construction and we are already linked in with the education institutions here So far, 1,300 companies from this region have registered on our supply chain portal Regional economic benefit could be up to £200m per year during construction with total of £4 billion over the lifetime. Our New Build project teams at EDF Energy are working hard to develop robust proposals for the delivery of the UK’s new generation of nuclear power stations. We know from our experience at Hinkley, and indeed, looking back to the construction of Sizewell B, that this will be a catalyst for upskilling and economic prosperity across the region. The East of England is the only region with two new build opportunities, and the economic benefits are wide ranging. Sizewell C alone could create 1000 apprenticeships, and provide the launch-pad for a generation of young people in this region to find well-paid and rewarding careers. The project could put as much a £4 billion into the regional economy over the lifetime of the plant, securing benefits across education, skills, employment, supply chain and inward investment.
