2. The Early Revolution The King grumpily accepts the revolution because:
He is desperate to fix France
He would not be able to stop it without a war
He and his family eventually become hostages

3. The Early Revolution
From 1789 to 1791, France is ruled under the following rules:
King Louis XVI is the head of the government.
The Assembly is responsible for writing the constitution of France.
Both the King and Assembly are held in Paris, where the National Guard protects the people rather than the King.

From 1789 to 1791, the National Assembly accomplishes 3 major things:
1789: Abolition of Feudalism
1789: Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
1791: passage of the First French Constitution

5. Abolition of Feudalism
The first thing done by the Assembly is the ending of Feudalism:
No more privileges for nobles
No special courts
End to taxes paid to the church
End to taxes paid to nobles

6. Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
The assembly passes the DOROMAC to ensure people’s rights during the long process of creating the constitution.
We’ll study it later.

7. First French Constitution
The Constitution of 1791:
Establishes a democracy
Only men of property vote (about 50% of French Men)
King remains head of Government
Few rights for women (sorry, ladies)
The Assembly disbands afterwards and the first elected government in French History comes to power.

8. Assignment: The Rights of Man
For each article of the DOROMAC:
Create a bullet list of protections for citizens
Create a bullet list of restrictions on government
Determine which among them seem most important to you.
