3 Today: the Tools of a Geographer
Objective: 1. Understand the tools that Geographers use to understand the world 2.Understand maps and globes 3.Understand the technology that geographers use to understand the world 4. Look at the 2012 Saints schedule and complete Saints Geography

4 Review- The 5 Themes of Geography

5 GLOBE A THREE DIMENSIONAL REPRESENTATION OF THE EARTH

6 MAP TWO DIMENSIONAL GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF THE EARTH

7 Which is more accurate a Map or a globe?

8 Which is more accurate a Map or a globe?
A Globe is closer to the shape of the earth so it is more accurate. But a globe is not very practical because it is not very portable. You can’t carry a globe in your back pocket!

9 What is the Problem with Maps?
The disadvantage in a map is that distortion occurs as the surface of the earth is flattened to create a map.

10 CARTOGRAPHER MAPMAKER Cartographer wants to reduce
distortion by using different types of Map projections MAPMAKER

11 MAP PROJECTION DIFFERENT WAYS OF DRAWING THE EARTH’S SURFACE ON FLAT PAPER * THREE TYPES PLANAR(AZIMUTHAL), CONICAL, AND COMPROMISE

12 TOPOGRAPHIC MAP A REPRESENTATION OF NATURAL AND MAN MADE FEATURES ON THE EARTH

13 First Step in making a Map is to make a Field Survey
Today Field Surveys are done by using satellites

14 LANDSAT A SERIES OF SATELLITES THAT ORBIT THE EARTH AND OBTAIN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

15 GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS
STORES INFORMATION ABOUT THE WORLD IN A DIGITAL DATABASE

16 G.P.S.- Global Positioning System
Exact Position is Displayed:latitude, Longitude, altitude, & time GPS can be used To track the positions Of animals

17 PHYSICAL MAP SHOWS NATURAL FEATURES ON THE EARTHS SURFACE LANDFORMS AND BODIES OF WATER

18 POLITICAL MAP SHOWS FEATURES ON A MAP THAT HUMANS CREATED CITIES, STATES, COUNTRIES, ROADS

19 SCALE SHOWS DISTANCE ON A MAP Scale

20 Map Legends or Key List and explains the symbols and color on map
Religions Legend

21 Can you understand this legend?

22 Age Expectancy Legend

23 Compass Rose The needle on a compass is magnetized to point to the earth's north magnetic pole. Thus with a compass, a person can roughly tell which direction they are headed. There are four major or cardinal directions on a compass- north, south, east & west. In between are the directions northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest.
