1 Lets Review! Handout 10 Waves
the movement of energy through a body of water They begin by the wind- the wind transmits its energy to the water strength of the wind length of time the wind blows distance over which the wind blows

2 trough Wavelength Wave height

3 There is a high frequency of waves occurring in this picture
There is a high frequency of waves occurring in this picture. The crests are close together so the wavelengths are short. This makes the wave height high.

4 Your beautiful science artwork here 
It seems to bob up and down

5 The energy of the wave moves toward the shore but the wave itself remains in place.
As the wave passes the floating object, the object moves forward then bobs back to nearly the same spot

6 Example of Wave Motion

7

8 The wave breaks onto the shore forming surf.
In deep water, the wave is a swell. As a wave approaches the shore and the ocean floor gets steeper, the wave height increases. When the wave reaches a certain height, it breaks on the shore. Cause: as the waves approach the shore, the water becomes shallower. Friction between the ocean floor and shallow water causes the water to slow down. As speed decreases, the shape changes. The wave breaks onto the shore forming surf.

9 They form below the ocean surface
They form below the ocean surface. They are caused by earthquakes beneath the ocean floor. The energy for most tsunamis comes from movement related to earthquakes on the ocean floor. Energy in regular wave comes from wind blowing across the water. This energy is not as powerful as that of the energy released during an earthquake.
