14 Current stage of Eurostat user interfaces
{1} Contract >> {2} Development >> {3} Testing >> {4} TryThis >> {5} Production Table-Graph-Map (predefined data sets) TGM1{4}; TGM2 {1} New User Interface (open data sets) NUI1 {3}; NUI2 {2}; NUI3 {1} NUI1 will not go into production Business Cycle Watch (Principal European Economic Indicators) BCW1 {3}; BCW2 {1} Profiles (key predefined data sets) Country Profiles {3}; Regional & City Profiles {1} Passive to more pro-active; central multi-annual publication portfolio At least one flagship (compendium) for each major topic Publications could be multi-annual More general compendia (besides Yearbook and brochure Portrait of the EU, also pocketbook Key Figures on Europe and EU integration seen through statistics) Pocket books free-of-charge >> appetizers/portals started HP and TP, successively all other pages, only a few pages to go bnbnbn Sharing European statistical news

15 TGM-interface TGM1 Upgrade for TGM2 (some examples)
non-SVG performance, visible legend, more time periods, extra graphs and map layers, Google type of map navigation, link to related open data set, graph/map background image, information balloons, provision of web services

16 Business Cycle Watch Animated graphical display intended for an experienced user Cycle calculation  deviation from long term trend (configurable methods for calculation (HP/CF/..) Let us start with GDP in The Netherlands Next upgrade: (a) graph displaying more/all countries for one or two indicators, (b) besides PEEIs also other sets, (c) clear time stamp, (d) print, save (e) animated demo which could help novice (f) more calculation methods, (g) configurable graph symbols, (h) configurable default opening (country/indicators), (i) easy administrator interface for system configuration Uses XML as input and is based on open source Flash and falls under EUPL. Now in test, but we also need to improve the content (missing seasonally adjusted data). Test version available for the NSIs. Your feedback which will be highly appreciated.

17 Turning points: German example
OECD-CLI* BCW-ESI** BCW-PI BCW-GDP IFO-GDP*** Trough Jul 93 May 93 Q3 93 Peak Dec 94 Jan 95 Q1 95 Feb 96 Jul 96 Apr 96 Q3 96 Q1 97 Mar 98 May 98 Q4 97 Q1 98 Feb 99 Mar 99 Apr 99 Q1 99 May 00 Aug 00 Oct 00 Q4 00 * Composite Leading Indicator ** Economic Sentiment Indicator *** Baxter-King & Bry-Boschan NB. Although the BCW is not intended to determine turning points per indicator the German BCW example is not performing too bad.
