1 Graph Interpretation and Connections….

2 What can you “see” on a position vs. time graph?
Direction Displacement Velocity (slope of the line) Inferences which can be drawn include: -steep slope fast velocity -slope of 0 degrees (parallel to the x-axis) implies rest

3

4 A woman leaves her house and drives at a constant rate to the grocery store which is 5 miles east of her house. After the grocery store, she drives westward to the dry cleaners which is 20 miles away. Finally, she speeds home. Using her house at origin, create a motion diagram and a time vs. distance graph.

5 Relating a position vs. time graph to a velocity vs. time graph…
Slope of the position graph translates into values on a velocity graph. Direction of motion can also be interpreted. Down slope is motion in the left Up slope is motion to the right No slope is stationary which translates into no velocity

6 Stop and think… Which velocity diagram corresponds with the position diagram?

7 The best answer is C!!! Notice that all displacement is to the right (above x-axis) Slope begins steady (flat line) then starts decreasing (downward) then flattens out to suggest no motion or coming to rest (line is now on the x-axis)

8 Relating a velocity vs. time graph to an acceleration vs. time graph…
Slope of the velocity vs. time line is the acceleration rate of the particle

9 Connecting all three types of graphs…

10 Stop and think… the ball rolls up the ramp, then back down
Stop and think… the ball rolls up the ramp, then back down. Which acceleration graph is correct?

11 D!!! As soon as the ball moves onto the ramp gravity “takes over” and gravity is always down.

12 What would the velocity vs. time graph and position vs
What would the velocity vs. time graph and position vs. time graphs look like for a ball rolling up a ramp?
