1 Starter Task: Why are forests important? List at least 3 reasons and explain. Extension Task: Is it also important that we harvest forests for the economy? Then let’s finish presenting Issues Canadian Farmers Face!

2 The Forestry Industry Learning Objective:
To introduce Canada’s forestry industry FUN FACT: Forests = 42% of Canada

3 Softwood forests make up 66% of Canada’s forest cover
They consist mainly of coniferous trees such as fir, pine, and spruce Hardwood forests account for 12% of the forest cover. They are made up mainly of deciduous trees such as poplar, maple, and birch. The remaining 22% are mixed forests that contain both coniferous and deciduous trees.

4 Sustained yield forest management:
the controlled use of forest resources at a rate that allows forests to renew themselves.

5 Commercial Forests Trees that can be harvested for profit. $$$
In warmer, wetter areas of Canada where trees grow quickly. Their timber can easily be shipped to markets in Canada and abroad because they are near roads, railways, and waterways

6 Non-commercial Forests
Forests unlikely to be harvested. North of the commercial forests, where temperatures and precipitation levels are too low for trees to grow quickly or large enough for harvesting. Too far from transportation routes to make shipment economical

7 The forest industry produces lumber, pulp and paper, and other forest products worth
$81 billion per year (2004) The industry also provides more than direct jobs for Canadians and almost indirect jobs in companies that provide products and services for forestry companies and workers.

8 Logging Operations Clear-cutting
Method of removing trees which is used in the majority of logging operations. Loggers remove every tree, leaving a barren landscape behind. When replanted, the new forest grows up uniformly in species and size. If replanting does not take place, less desirable species may grow or the exposed soil may erode, and land may be damaged. Shelterwood Logging Clear-cutting only part of a forest. Groups of seed-bearing trees are left standing so that their seeds can regenerate the logged area. Selective Cutting Harvests only mature trees of the desired size, type, or quality. Less disruptive to the forest environment. $$$ because of the extra care and time taken to cut down the trees.

9 Lumber Products include raw cut timber, plywood, cedar shingles, particleboard, and chipboard One province clearly dominates this industry: BC Sawmills tend to be much smaller operations than pulp and paper mills and takes advantage of the unique characteristics of the particular forest that supplies the wood, and specializes in a particular market

10 Recreation For many Canadians, especially those who live in cities and towns, important as a place to “get away from it all”. Forests, with their lakes and rivers, provide the setting for a wide range of recreational activities such as camping, hiking, canoeing, and fishing. E.g. Gatineau Park, Algonquin National Park

11 Demonstration Task: Find 5 facts about forests on p.310
What are 3 methods for harvesting trees? (see p. 315) How can we harvest the forest for products that we need and at the same time protect the forest environment? Extension Task: Of the 3 types of logging operations, which one seems like the best option? Why?

12 BE HERE FOR THE REVIEW ON WEDNESDAY!
On Unit 3 so far: Fishing Agriculture Forestry Quiz on Thursday

13 Reflection Task: List 3 things the person next to you has learned today. Did you share any of the same information?
