1 IEEE 802.16m Network Reference Model, Functional Architecture, and Protocol Architecture
Document Number: IEEE C802.16m-07/304r1 Date Submitted: Source: Ronny (Yong-Ho) Kim Kiseon Ryu Jin Sam Kwak Suk Woo Lee Minseok Oh LG Electronics, Inc. Re: TGm Call for Contribution on SDD, IEEE m-07/040 Abstract : Discussion on IEEE m network reference model, functional architecture, and protocol architecture in the m SDD Purpose: To adopt this proposal as a IEEE m network reference model, functional architecture, and protocol architecture in the m SDD Notice: This document does not represent the agreed views of the IEEE Working Group or any of its subgroups. It represents only the views of the participants listed in the “Source(s)” field above. It is offered as a basis for discussion. 2 Background (1/2) IEEE m System Requirement Document specifies as follows; IEEE m shall provide continuing support and interoperability for legacy WirelessMAN-OFDMA equipment, including MSs and BSs. IEEE m shall provide the ability to disable legacy support. IEEE m shall provide support for handover with other RATs. However, an IEEE m MS is not required to be multi-mode. IEEE m shall provide service continuity during handover for both inter-RAT and intra-RAT handover. Based on these requirement, IEEE m network reference model and functional architecture shall be designed so as to provide the ability to enable/disable legacy support and to support inter-RAT and intra-RAT handover.

3 Background (2/2) 16m Network Reference Model is desirable to include the interface and reference point for both legacy support and disabled legacy support. 16m Network Reference Model is desirable to keep the NCMS for the network control and management to be consistent with the existing current 16 standard. In case of legacy support, the interface between 16m MS and 16m BS should contains both legacy functions to be re-used, and the enhanced functions newly defined in 16m.

4 Proposed 16m Network Reference Model

5 Proposed Reference Point
Interface Description U Legacy MS - Legacy BS Legacy Air Interface Um 16m MS - 16m BS 16m Air Interface I Legacy BS - Legacy BS Interface between Legacy BSs Im 16m BS - 16m BS Interface between 16m BSs O 16m BS - Non Network Interface between 16m BS and Non networks to support Inter-RAT HO Note) The interface between 16m MS/BS and legacy BS/MS shall be defined as the same with the reference point U. The interface between 16m BS and legacy BS shall be defined as the same with the reference point I.

6 Proposed Functional Architecture
• 16m Functions – Disabled Legacy Support : A set of functions of 16m MS/BS in a network where the legacy support is disabled • 16m Functions – Legacy Support : A set of functions of 16m MS/BS in a network where the legacy support is enabled Note) The 16m functions in the overlapped region are commonly used in both cases.

7 <Legacy Support>
Conceptual Approach Enhanced system configuration/control information Smooth Migration <Legacy Support> <Disabled Legacy Support> FCH† / MAP† : Enhanced FCH/MAP for supporting m with legacy support FCHnew/ MAPnew : New FCH/MAP for supporting m without legacy support 16m Zone #k : New permutation zone for m without legacy support

8 Overall Protocol Architecture
Main Functionalities per Layer

9 MAC Functionalities MAC-Function Connectivity : High-Level View
