13 Why open Statistics Explained?
Statistics Explained today Articles drafted by Eurostat staff Articles providing an analysis at EU level and some comparisons between Member States Statistics Explained tomorrow National articles drafted by NSI staff National articles providing a more in- depth analysis on a national level

14 Why open Statistics Explained?
Better service for users of European and national statistics: Broaden the picture: Complement the information on the EU with more detailed information at national/regional level Make it easier for the user to compare the situation in his country/region with neighbouring countries Facilitate the search: find all information on one topic at the same place

15 Why open Statistics Explained?
Advantages for the NSI: Greater visibility of national articles through Statistics Explained Provide a European background to the national context And the opposite: give the European articles a national dimension High return with limited investment

16 How to do this in practice?
Topics of articles: - Should be topics which interest a large public Data/indicators: - Based on structural, mainly annual, data (short-term statistics imply too many updates) - Based on a harmonised methodology Language: - Articles need to be translated into English - National and English versions will be uploaded in Statistics Explained 16

17 What is the next step? Pilot group with Eurostat and any NSI interested Role: - More precisely define the content of the project - Try it out in practice with one subject (eg. labour market statistics) – could eventually end up in an on-line pdf publication - Discuss work-arrangements, technical issues etc. Any questions?? 17
