3. Junior Year: Fun Facts
These are your final grades before college applications
Class rank is only updated in January and June (classes taken in summer ‘19 won’t reflect in class rank until January of Senior year). Ranking is often looked at by competitive schools and scholarships.
Time to narrow down decisions about future plans
This is the year for college testing (ACT, SAT)

4. Senior Year Registration
Juniors choose class requests with their counselor in the next couple of weeks
Changes can be made to requests for one week in January
Only required to take what they still need to graduate but can take up to a full day
Requesting a half-day: may be scheduled in morning or afternoon and may have lunch--- this cannot be changed
Reasons for a schedule change: computer error, graduation requirement, medical, completed course (with counselor approval)
College-bound students: continue taking math even if 4 years completed
Students that are behind and need to make up credits online- complete in summer; may not be approved during the school year
Check with counselor BEFORE signing up for any classes outside of O’Connor

Test for college credit in May is optional but has the potential to earn the student college credit
$99 per test
Check College Board website to find out how specific universities will count the scores for credit: itandplacement/search-credit-policies
Credit transfers to most colleges/universities:
Cost is $86 per credit hour + registration fee
Senior year English and Math have a placement test requirement
C’s or better required for college credit
Student requests Rio Salado transcript be sent to their college/university to receive the credits

6. Applying to College
Application
Usually open in the summer
Require: Application, transcripts ( ACT/SAT scores sent directly from ACT or College Board (unless requested at time of test)
In-State
Most look at 16 core classes and unweighted GPA for admissions purposes
Most use self-reported applications and only require transcript after graduation, unless specifically requested
Out-of-State
Can have early deadlines- as early as November 1st- check with individual school website for date
Verify testing needed- do they need writing or SAT Subject tests?

7. Financial Aid & Scholarships
FAFSA application opens October 1st of Senior year (for grants and/or student loans)
Academic scholarships are awarded after being admitted
ASU- scholarship estimator based on GPA & SAT/ACT
UofA- scholarships based on GPA & SAT/ACT
NAU- Lumberjack and others
GCU- grants.php
GCC/Maricopa Community Colleges- Presidential Scholarship

Private scholarships are sometimes available through employer for their employee’s children

Athletic scholarships are usually discussed directly between coaches and athlete’s families

8. Testing- PSAT, SAT, ACT PSAT given on Sat. October 13th, 2018.
Junior year PSAT is the qualifying test for National Merit Scholarship program
PSAT partners with Khan Academy to create personalized review
All Juniors take ACT on 2/20/19
Out of state universities may want SAT/ACT with writing- check websites

Proficient AZMerit or Meets the Standard AIMS Science = raise 1 letter grade (up to a B)*
Highly Proficient or Exceeds the Standard = raise 1 letter grade (up to an A)*

10. NCAA
Student athletes with the potential to play at Division I, II, or III school need to register during Junior year at: -athletes/future
NCAA does not accept online courses from outside schools
DVOLP courses are accepted- do not mark that they are online classes
