1. They can look normal and have many diseases 2. They actually do not know they have one or more disease.

9 Case #1 Jim has noticed that lately it burns when he urinates. Otherwise, he feels fine. He asked his girlfriend, and she said she feels fine. She tries to be careful by being on the pill and douching every time they have sex. What could Jim have? How could you treat it? Why didn’t his girlfriend have symptoms? What symptoms might she have later?

10 Case #2 Janet is 23 years old and has a boyfriend (Pat) she met on the job. Janet recently had a red rash on her arm and some problem “down there” (see photo-next slide). Fortunately, the rash went away after about a week. What does Janet have? Why didn’t Pat have anything unusual? How could Janet treat this?

16 What can you do to avoid getting any diseases from each other?
Abstinence or monogamy Be knowledgeable about risks Many underestimate personal risks Negative attitude toward condom use Myth of personal invulnerability Remain sober Inspect yourself and your partner

17 Talking with partner about STD’s
How do you start? E.g. “I brought something I want us to use.” “I know this is clumsy, but the world is not as safe as it used to be, and I think we should talk about pregnancy and STD’s before we do anything.” “I don’t know him/her well enough to talk about this.”
