1 Each specializing in one vital job within the cell
8 Organelles TEACHER NOTES below Materials per student: sheet of copy paper, scissors, ruler, colored pencils Simple teacher notes: Click through the PowerPoint and have students do everything shown on the screen! Other Notes: To see a preview of this lesson on video go to Change any text you like in the ppt, including the organelles and what’s written inside the doors Watch that students don’t cut on those lines until AFTER we’ve titled and colored the front; if they cut too early, it’s much more difficult and time-consuming. Also make sure that when they’re writing their notes inside the little doors that they are aware of where that margin ends; keep the title area on the right clear if possible. Teachers-make one of these graphic organizers for yourself so you have an example to show, and because it makes you more descriptive when doing the lesson. Print these slides to help you present. Click Print, then under “Print what:” select “Handouts (6 Slides per page)” See notes on later slides for more information I did this with my students on a Tuesday, and on Friday they had a quiz: list the 8 organelles and their functions (that’s why we circled each fact 1 on the ppt). Teachers- make one of these for yourself beforehand; that way everything makes sense to you, and you have an example to show students. Yes- you can change any text you like. Marking lines for the doors, cutting them, adding titles, then coloring Watch that students don’t cut on those lines until AFTER we’ve titled and colored the front; if they cut too early, it’s much more difficult and time-consuming. Also make sure that when they’re writing their notes inside the little doors that they are aware of where that margin ends; keep the title area on the right clear if possible. Make a mark every 3 ½ cm (at 3 ½ , 7, 10 ½ , 14, 17 ½ , 21, and 24 ½ ) Draw lines across those Name the organelles Title and color the sections Cut each line (top sheet only!)

4 A L L C E L L S O r g a n e l l e s PLANTS ONLY Animals ribosomes
Perform cellular respiration, which uses oxygen to release stored energy in food (removed for preview) ribosomes A L L C E L L S O r g a n e l l e s Now inside- write 2 facts about each organelle Fact 1: (removed for preview) Fact 2: (removed for preview) PLANTS ONLY What’s inside my other doors: Ribosomes: make proteins by assembling chains of amino acids; are not enclosed in a membrane Endoplasmic reticulum: help in the making, processing, and movement of proteins, and in making lipids; it’s a system of membranes near the nucleus Golgi complex: package and distribute things like protein and lipids; a system of flattened sacs Cell wall: provide support and protection to the cell; a rigid structure that surrounds the cell Large central vacuole: stores water and supports the plant cell; animal cells also have vacuoles that store nutrients, enzymes, water, and wastes Chloroplast: where photosynthesis occurs, where sunlight, CO2, and water combine to form oxygen and sugar; the green solution inside chloroplasts is called chlorophyll Lysosomes: contain enzymes which break down wastes, foreign invaders, and worn out organelles; attach to vacuoles Animals
