background -The Illinois Tall Grass Prairie thrived for 8000 years
-Adapted to survive blistering summers, bitter winters, severe drought, and raging fire. -In the process of growing, the plants and animals helped to create some of the most fertile soils in the world. -With the invention of the the steel plow, grasslands were plowed and transformed into farm fields -In the 1820s, prairie covered about 22 million acres in Illinois -Today, less than 2500 acres of high-quality prairie remain, over 99% having been lost to plowing and paving - Endangered

watersheds - The primary source of the water supply comes from Lake Paradise and Lake Mattoon (southwest corner of Coles County) for the residents in the community. - Mattoon has a water treatment plant that treats the water pumped from the lakes and tests the quality of it before allowing it to be used by Mattoon residents. - The Wabash River is the main source for the water in Lake Mattoon. - Mattoon has a WASTE treatment plant that treats water that comes in through the sewers before releasing it into the environment - The City of Mattoon has a combined sewer system. Work is beginning on plans to construct a satellite treatment facility for the combined sewer overflows near Riley Creek on the north side town. Construction is expected to be completed in 3 phases from 2014 to 2018.

Climate Change Impacts on Agriculture, Forests, and other Ecosystems
-In the short term, climate change could help or harm agriculture, forests, and other ecosystems in the Midwest. -where sufficient water and other nutrients are available, crops and forests may benefit from a longer growing season and increased levels of carbon dioxide. -On the other hand, climate change may negatively impact the health of crops, trees, and animals in the region.

native plants - The boundary between zones 5 and 6 have shifted about 60 miles to the north during the 30 year period of Zone 4 has left Illinois in the new map. - Mattoon is located in zone 6a in the USDA Plant Hardiness map, but in past 30 years, mattoon is in zone 5b. With global climate changing, it is predictable that the plant hardiness will be 6b in mattoon in years.
