1 Silver Nitrate Lab – Day 3 Limiting Reactants

2 Evaluation/Assessment:
Objective: Today I will be able to: Calculate the mass of silver produced when reacting copper with silver nitrate Apply stoichiometric ratios to finding the mass of reactants and products Determine the limiting and excess reactants in a chemical reaction Evaluation/Assessment: Informal Assessment – Monitoring student interactions as they complete the practice and the lab Formal Assessment – Analyzing student responses to the lab and the limiting reactant practice Common Core Connection Make sense of problem and persevere in solving them Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning Attend to precision Use appropriate tools strategically

3 Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm – Up Elaborate: Review Excess Reactants
Explain: Silver Nitrate Lab Safety Engage and Explore: Silver Nitrate Lab Elaborate: Limiting Reactant Practice Evaluate: Exit Ticket

4 Warm - Up Answer the question below for the following reaction:
Mg(s) + 2HCl (aq)  MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g) 0.500 grams of Mg is reacted with 10.0 g of HCl to produce 1.95 grams of MgCl2. Mg is the limiting reactant and HCl is the excess reactant. What problem solving strategy would you use to determine how much HCl is in excess?

5 Solve the Problem! Answer the question below for the following reaction: Mg(s) + 2HCl (aq)  MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g) 0.500 grams of Mg is reacted with 10.0 g of HCl to produce 1.95 grams of MgCl2. Mg is the limiting reactant and HCl is the excess reactant. How much HCl is in excess?

6 Objective Today I will be able to:
Calculate the mass of silver produced when reacting copper with silver nitrate Apply stoichiometric ratios to finding the mass of reactants and products Determine the limiting and excess reactants in a chemical reaction

7 Homework Work on Mole Project Due March 11
Finish Limiting Reactant Practice

8 Agenda Warm-Up Excess Reactant Problem Silver Nitrate Lab Safety
Day 3: Silver Nitrate Lab Limiting Reactant Practice Exit Ticket

9 Silver Nitrate Lab Day 3

10 Day 3 Day 3 – Today we are finding the mass of silver produced
Have one lab group member measure the mass of the silver Then complete the calculations Write the mass of silver and percent error for your group on the board once you complete the calculations

11 Limiting Reactant Practice
After completing the filtration, complete the limiting reactant practice at your desk. Problems not completed in class will become your homework

12 Exit Ticket The current price for silver is 0.68 cents per gram. How much money can we reclaim for the silver we produced? Look at the percent errors for the lab? What could have caused the errors we are seeing in the data?
