1 Kinetic Energy: Energy Due to Motion (ex)*An Object in Motion)

2 Introduction: Do Now Kathie is trying out for her 4th grade bowling team. She has the option of using a 6 lb ball, a 12 lb ball, or a 16 lb ball. Which do you think would be the best for her to use? EXPLAIN.

3 Calculating Kinetic Energy
Kinetic Energy (KE)=1/2 mass x velocity² KE=1/2 mv² The unit used for KE is joules (J) The unit for mass is grams, kg. The unit for velocity is meters per second (m/s)

4 What is the KE of a 100 kg object that is moving at a speed of 10 m/s?
Sample Problems: Solving for KE. What is the KE of a 100 kg object that is moving at a speed of 10 m/s? KE= 100 kg x 10² m/s = /2= 5000 Joules 2

5 Sample 2: Solving for Mass An object has a KE of 1000 J and is moving at a speed of 10 m/s, What is the Mass? 1000 J = m x (10)² J = 100 m 1000 J = 50 m 1000 J = m 50 m= 20 kg

6 Sample 3: Solving for Velocity
An object has KE of 1000 J and a Mass of 20 kg. What is its speed? KE = mv² J = 20 kg x v² 1000 J = 10 x v² 1000 J = v² 10 V²=100 (square root of 100) ---- v= 10
