Pope Paul III saw that the Protestant Reformation was spreading, so he organized the meeting for the Council of Trent
The Catholic Church
The Protestants were invited, however, they didn’t have a say
Calvinist and Lutheran were asked to participate

4. What happened
Pope Paul didn’t like how fast the Protestant religion was spreading he summoned church leader to Trent, Italy (Council of Trent)
There were three meeting; lasted
The council reviewed to over look church doctrines (a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a church)
They reviewed the complaints by the Protestants about the Catholic Church
Banned the sale of indulgences and it tightened discipline for the clergy

Council reaffirmed the importance of the doctrines the Protestants didn’t want
The council’s decision emphasized the worship of God and the need for religious ceremonies and people must depend on priests
Reforms started to happen because of all the corruption in the Catholic Church

People found the Protestantism’s simplicity and austerity (strictness, sternness) appealing, but others took comfort from traditional ceremonies and churches
