1 IR: “to go”

2 IR To go in Spanish is “ir” “ir” is an irregular -ir verb.
The infinitive of ir is…….you guessed it! IR

3 But how do I conjugate it?
Now that I know the word for “to go,” how can I say “I need to go”? Since ir is an irregular verb, it does not conjugate as easily as other -ir verbs. You will need to memorize these conjugations of ir.

4 I go-yo voy To say “I go,” one must say “yo voy.”
See how it’s different than the regular -ir verbs? I go to school. Voy a la escuela.

5 Wait just a minute….. You took away the yo! Why?
When conjugating verbs in Spanish, we are changing it to say a certain person is doing that activity. So by conjugating ir to voy, I am changing the word from to go to I go.

6 OK what about you? To say you go, you say tú vas. You go to school.
Vas a la escuela. (remember that the tú can disappear because the conjugate already means you go)

7 he/she? To say he/she goes, one says él/ella va.
He goes to school. She goes to school. Él va a la escuela. Ella va a la escuela. (Remember that only adjectives change based on the gender of the noun, this, and all other verbs, stay the same)

8 you formal? To say you formal go, you say usted va.
You formal go to school. Va a la escuela. You use you formal to talk to older people and people who you respect.

9 What about we? We go becomes nosotros vamos. We go to school.
Vamos a la escuela.

10 How about they? They go becomes ellos van. They go to school.
Ellos van a la escuela. Ellas van a la escuela. There are two forms of they: Ellos which is masculine or mixed gender, and Ellas which is feminine.

11 What about you plural To say you plural go, you say ustedes van.
You all go to school. Van a la escuela. You use you plural to say you all or ya’ll. This is used when you are talking directly to more than one person.

12 ellos/ellas/ustedes van
Altogether! yo voy tú vas él/ella/usted va nosotros vamos ellos/ellas/ustedes van

13

14 Notes IR is almost always followed by an a. The a means “to.” I go to the beach. Voy a la playa. When asking the question where, you can use adónde to say where to instead of just dónde for where.

15 ¡Pruébalo! Escribe las frases en español: 1. We go to the beach
2. They go to the mall 3. You formal go to school 4. You go to home 5. I go to the library 6. She goes to the synagogue 7. You all go to the movies
