Unit 26 Introduction

Examining health and social care services providing support Thinking about aids/equipment/support that people with additional needs might need. The aim of this unit is to enable you to challenge your attitudes to people with additional needs by

3 Individuals with additional needs
Have a right to receive the best quality care and support. This unit is about exploring additional needs experienced by individuals and how these might impact on their health, wellbeing and life opportunities. In this unit we think about provision from a number of services, requiring organisation to work in partnership to assess needs and provide support. In this unit we will look at additional needs experienced, what affect this has, models of disability, the law and guidance and policies. We will also consider current practice including a person centred approach. This links to Unit 2 which you did in the first year – Equality and Diversity.

4 Unit Learning Outcomes
Know the reasons why individuals may experience additional needs. Understand the barriers experienced by individuals with additional needs. Understand current practice with respect to provision for individuals with additional needs. Information about the assignment: P1-4 M1-2 D1 Short assignment tasks – it is 5 credits so will be taught for 9 weeks for the first part of the semester. Give out scheme of work and assignment deadlines. Explain the first assignment task and give it out. Say we will do each assignment task as we go along although the full assignment will be on the wiki.

5 Unit 26 , P1 To achieve the P1 criteria you should Identify a person in your practice area with additional needs. Describe the causes of the person’s condition/s and outline the reasons why the individual would experience additional needs. You should present your work in the form of a 1000 word case study. You are required to use relevant research/literature evidence while observing the confidentiality of the service user that you are discussing and the service provision they receive. (Just changing the name of the service user may not be enough). Explain assignment and take any questions. Set assignment deadline hand in date.

6 What are additional needs?
Physical Cognitive Sensory Poster work – each group come up with types of additional needs put on poster. Physical needs – physical, movement, ability to help self physically Cognition- memory, learning ability/disability Sensory – blind, deaf, mute, etc

7 What types of needs are there
Genetic Developmental Environmental Accidents Discuss the meaning of each on Poster work – look at the needs that you have detailed, link them to one of the 4 types of needs that there are. Whole group diagram done on flip chart paper – comprehensive list which can then be put onto a handout and put on to the wiki for use in first assignment task.

Small group task: In your small group you need to come up with a definition for: Disability Impairment Small group work What is disability and impairment Groups to come up with their own definitions – feedback to the group and take key words to transfer to the white board. 10 Disability “A physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person's ability to carry out day-to-day activities.” Disability Discrimination Act, 1995.

11 Disablism Thompson N, p20, 2001 Disability is a
“concept which distinguishes a certain proportion of the population (those with some degree of physical impairment) from the ‘able bodied’ majority”. Argued that by making it a physical problem then this overlooked the social and emotional impact of a disability on the individual and their families. Disablism – the biological level of the diagnosis gives a legitimate means of allowing unequal power relations at the social and political levels.
