3 LUCY Found by Donald Johanson in 1974 in Ethiopia
Lucy was the earliest hominid found to date at over 3.5 million years old Named after the Beatles song – Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

4 Key Terms Artifact – remains such as tools, jewelry, and other non-human objects. Culture – people’s unique way of life. Technology – ways of applying knowledge, tools and inventions to meet needs. Hunter – Gatherers – Food supply depends on people hunting animals and collecting crops. Neolithic Revolution – “agricultural revolution”

Slash and burn farming – cut trees or grass and burned them to clear the land. Replenished the soil with nutrients. Specialization – development of skills in specific kind of work. Artisans – skilled workers who made goods by hand. Bronze Age – time in which bronze was used over copper and stone to make weapons and tools. Ziggurat – “mountain of god” – pyramid momument

7 About the Land Fertile Crescent - Arc of land that produces some of best farming in Southwest Asia. Silt – Thick bed of mud rich that formed a new rich soil on the land when Mesoptamia flood waters received.

8 Irrigation Systems Irrigation – ditches that carry water to their fields and allowed them to produce a surplus of crops. Helped cultivate more land Produce more crops Helped people learn new trades in a village.

9 Cultural Diffusion Cultural diffusion – process of new idea or a product spreading from one culture to another.

10 Polytheism vs. Monotheism
Polytheism – belief in many gods Monotheism – belief in one god

11 Empire Empire – bringing together several people, nations or previously independent states under one ruler.

12 Hammurabi’s Code Leader of the Babylonian empire from 1792 – 1750 b.c.
Hammurabi most known for his ideal of creating a single uniform code to bring diverse group of people together. Code of Hammurabi – 282 specific laws dealing with everything that affected the community, family, business and crime.

13 Early Egypt Menes – strong king form upper Egypt that united Egypt into one. Merged upper and lower Egypt together and created first Egyptian dynasty.

14 Egypt Mesopotamia kings were representatives of the gods, but in Egypt kings were gods. These god kings came to be called Pharaohs. Theocracy – type of government in which the ruler is a divine figure.

15 Egypt Pyramid – resting place after death for the pharaohs of Egypt.
Egyptians made good use of stone and did not have wheel to move stone. Showed the strength of the Egyptian empire

16 Egypt Hieroglyphics – developed by Egyptian scribes to form a new flexible writing system. Greek word meaning sacred carving. Pictures stood for sounds and ideals in hieroglyphics. Papyrus – tall stalks of reed that grew in Nile became early paper like sheets.
