Why was “quadricycle” an appropriate name for Henry Ford’s first car?
Because it had 4 wheels.

3. How are cars different today than when Henry Ford made his first car?
They have roofs and windshields.

4. Mechanization-
The use of machines to replace human and animal labor.
Assembly line-
Production where a person stays in one spot and adds a piece to each car as it moves past them.

5. How did the affordable automobile wind up creating new jobs?
People needed gasoline, rubber tires, paved roads and highways.
So new people were needed to help create these products and services.

6. The Wright Brothers
How did the Wright brothers connect their bicycle expertise with flying?
They knew that a good plane needed balance, a strong lightweight frame, and an awareness of the wind.

7. What advantages did the airplane hold over the automobile?
It allowed people to cover long distances quickly, planes 100mph, cars 45 mph
Also cars could only go on roads which were poorly paved so travel was difficult.

In what ways did having radio broadcasts change American life?
News could be spread instantly, over great distances, even to rural areas.

11. A New Great Migration
How accessible were good paying jobs in the south?
Scarce, Black Southerner’s found themselves laboring at the worst jobs with the lowest pay.

12. What point is illustrated by the bar graph on pg. 137?
The increase in Black Southerners moving to northern and western cities.

13. What examples of violence and discrimination were present in the North and Midwest?
Race riots that were sparked by immigrants seeing newly arrived blacks as competition.

14. Why do you think African Americans couldn’t get a fair chance at life without discrimination in the North and Midwest?
Discrimination- to treat differently (usually negative) based upon race or religion.
Because of segregation.
Segregation- separate but equal, or not so much.

15. Prohibition Prohibition-
A movement, ultimately leading to the 18th amendment, that wanted to stop the sale, transport, and consumption of alcohol.

16. How effective was prohibition?
Not very, most people found ways to get alcohol by getting prescriptions or going to speakeasies.
Speakeasy- a secret bar that sold bootleg alcohol.

17. Which results of Prohibition had negative effects on lives of Americans?
Organized crime and gangsters making money on bootleg alcohol.

What is your opinion of people who knowingly break the law? Does your opinion change depending on the law being broken? Why or why not?
