Careers in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

IS EVERYWHERE

Chemical Science...... is important to us all … is the world around us is more than you might have thought … is more than you might have thought … is always looking to the future

The Chemical Universe Chemistry is the study of atoms Atoms are the building blocks of nature How many atoms are there in a cup of tea? 15,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Chemical Science is shaping our future

Green Chemistry Chemical science that is environmentally friendly More efficient production of the chemicals we need 53% of people recycle paper - only 23% recycle plastic Cars powered by hydrogen

Chemistry in the Home Everything in your home is Chemistry Shower Gel, Wallpaper, Baked Beans… Teflon was discovered by accident Energy efficient, colour changing buildings

Fashion Looking good is down to chemical science Soaps, bath foam, shower gel Soaps, bath foam, shower gel 2-in-1 shampoos 2-in-1 shampoos Toothpaste and paint have many similar ingredients Toothpaste and paint have many similar ingredients Self-cleaning clothes and non-iron shirts Self-cleaning clothes and non-iron shirts Smelling good is down to chemistry See above… See above… Perfumes Perfumes Deodorants Deodorants

Healthier Lives All medicines use chemical science Clean water through chemical science We live twice as long now as 100 years ago Cures for Cancer, AIDS…

What have Chemists done? Invented life-saving drugs and medicines to treat chronic conditions Invented life-saving drugs and medicines to treat chronic conditions Devised hundreds of pest-control agents that ensure the maximum yields of crops. 16 Chemical Engineering involves changing RAW MATERIAL into VALUABLE products What is Chemical Engineering? RocksMetalsOilPlasticsDetergentsShampooCornCornflakes

Distinguishes different disciplines + Creativity + Problem solving ability = Engineer Technological awareness Recipe for an Engineer

What is Chemical Engineering? Chemistry Maths Physics Biology Chemical Engineering Management EconomicsLaw Administration

What jobs do Chemical Engineers do? Chemical engineers can be found: undertaking product & process research working in a design team commissioning process plants selling the product managing the organisation

Why a Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering Training Versatility - Flexibility in a changing world Job Security - Promotion Prospects Travel - International opportunities Meet People - Work in a professional team Scientific and technological challenges Social value – helping society Responsibility

EMPLOYMENT SECTORS Chemicals and Allied Products Water Industry Consultancy Process Plant & Equipment Manufacture Process Plant Construction Materials (plastics, metals) Pharmaceuticals & Toiletries Environmental Protection and Recycling Food and Drink Energy (gas, oil, nuclear) Education Other (banking, insurance, finance, marketing, journalism) Biotechnology Information Technology Where do Chemists/Chemical Engineers work? Forensic Science

Why Chemistry/Chem. Eng. in the UK? DTI (2004) The UK chemical industry is the country's largest manufacturing sector, accounting for 11% of the value added by the whole of the UK manufacturing industry. It employs more than 400,000 people and produces and sells products worth £42 billion annually, of which exports account for £23 billion. Two out of the top three largest pharmaceutical companies are base in the UK.

Within Ireland, this sector employs more than 23,000 people. It contributed ~34 billion to exports in 2001 (>33% of national total) and >400 million to the Exchequer. It has now surpassed the Information Technology (IT) sector as the country's biggest earner. Half of the pharmachem industry's workforce are graduates. Irish Business and Employers Confederation (2002) Sixteen of the world's top twenty pharmaceutical and healthcare companies have major plants in Ireland. Why Chemistry/Chem. Eng. in Ireland?

Each year, over 97% of our Chemistry graduates find employment in high-level jobs. Why Queens University? 100% of PhDs have found employment 36% PhD research 21% Further Training 40% Permanent Jobs 3% Unemployed 8% Overseas

Queens Number Two for Chemical Engineering Teaching in the UK ! Guardian University Guide

B.Sc., M.Sci. Chemistry & Medicinal Chemistry BEng, MEng Chemical Engineering Degrees with sandwich year: Industry Europe School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering High staff-student ratios Queen's is one of the Top 20 UK universities Cost of living is low
