Waxing – an increasing of the lit portion (from the right).
Waning – a decreasing of the lit portion (from the right).
Half of the moon is always lit by the sun, but the portion we see depends on your perspective.

Solar Eclipse: The moon blocks a portion of the Sun and casts a shadow on Earth.
