1 Success Criteria for Language and Literature
This is a step by step guide to paragraphing your responses. The example are based on To kill a mockingbird.

P – Make a point about how the topic is presented. For example In this extract the writer presents the theme of prejudice as negative and damaging. Or In this extract the writer presents the character of Atticus as calm and composed.

E – Use a quote from the extract – make sure it perfectly fits your point and has interesting language. E – Identify language features, re-quote the key word(s) and explain the meaning behind the quote. Aim to make multiple comments and interpretations on the quote and what it tells the reader, don’t state the obvious and don’t give a definition of a language feature.

4 Explanations Good The repetition of the word ‘think’ emphasises Jem’s desire to be shrewd in the deal with Dill also Harper Lee uses a simile to compare Boo to a ‘turtle’, this suggests that Jem views Boo as an animal he can trap and manipulative, inferring that Jem is more narrow minded at this stage of the novel Bad The word think is repeated twice showing Jem is trying to think about the deal. The simile ‘like a turtle’ is used to compare Boo Radley to a turtle.

Link – How does the reader react to the information? Context – How does this moment reflect contextual information.

In this extract a significant moment for the theme of fear is when Utterson and Poole are breaking down the door. This is significant because Utterson doesn’t know what they will face behind the door. Evidence – The best quote to fit with your point. Explanation – Make multiple comments on the language, re-quote and explain what the quotes shows about the theme and what the reader learns. Link – How does the reader react to the moment? Context – How does this moment reflect contextual information.

10 Poetry Point – One idea about the topic and how it is presented. Evidence – The best quote to fit with your point. Explanation – Make multiple comments on the language or structure, re-quote and explain what the quote shows about the topic Link – How does the reader react to the examples? Evaluation – Give a personal response – compliment, criticise or say how you feel.
