Creative Memory Game Creating False Memories (Based on the work of Deese, Roedigger and McDermott)

2 Instructions Show the 1st word list. For as long as it takes you to read the words aloud to the learners. Encourage them, “you’ll probably find the first few easy, when you hit the wall – push on, it’s as important that you remember as many as possible!” etc and allow them about a minute to keep on recalling the words. After 60 seconds, show the second list – again, for as long as it takes to read through the words with similar exhortations to put pressure on to get as many words as possible.

5 Results? It is probable that:
In the 1st list, many will have included the word ‘sweet’ when it wasn’t there. In the 2nd list, many might have included the word ‘anger’ when it wasn’t there. Discuss with your learners why this might have occurred. Clustering? Schemata? Excitation of adjoining neurons?
