2 I in I’mART The purpose of this section is to encourage you to think about your strengths and weaknesses relative to what the opportunity has to offer. You are encouraged to first determine short and long‐term goals that reflect your desired lifestyle and personal/professional objectives. Once these are determined, you can better evaluate the impact of the proposed opportunity on them. Completed chart (I of the I’MART) due Oct. 10/class 8 as Assignment 3

5 Improving learning for entrepreneurship
Single and Double Loop Learning

6 Self-awareness and double loop learning
Merciless self-examination that prompts reinvention of underlying assumptions, goals, and the methods to achieve them. Argyris, C.; Schon, D. (1978). Organizational Learning: A theory of action perspective.

7 Single Loop Learning How? Outcomes? Techniques
Results Product/ service Outcomes? Techniques Tactics, tools (action strategies) Single loop: Doing things right How can we work more efficiently? DO NOT GET STUCK IN SINGLE LOOP LEARNING when solving entrepreneurial problems. SINGLE LOOP LEARNING asks how can we modify techniques, tools and actions for different results?

8 Single + Double Loop Learning
Use Double Loop Learning when solving entrepreneurial problems. Is this the most effective way to reach our goals? Reflection Underlying Assumptions Why? How? Results Product/ service Outcomes? Techniques Tactics, tools (action strategies) Single loop: Doing things right Double loop: Are we doing the right things? How can we work more efficiently?

9 Entrepreneurs and Entrepreneurship
What comes first, the chicken or the egg? Most approaches to creativity/innovation maintain that folks aren’t creative without a problem to solve/opportunity to leverage. Perhaps that’s one thing that makes CFA different than engineering or business: We DO believe that inspired creativity happens, sometimes outside of practical considerations. Sometimes art solves problems, but other times, it expresses meanings, and that’s enough.

10 Entrepreneurs and Entrepreneurship
When the “business”/practical question: “How can I do that (express meanings artistically) for the benefit of someone other than just me (an audience)”? comes in, then I have a PROBLEM to solve And probably need entrepreneurial thinking and skills to solve it.

11 One map of the process There are many
We’ll further iterate one this later in the course
