2. Joe plans to build a bookcase
Joe plans to build a bookcase. The case will have four shelves, and each shelf will be 3 1 2
feet long.
Will Joe have enough lumber if he starts with 16 feet?
You could multiply times 4 and see if it is less than 16 or you could divide 16 by and see if it is at least 4.
x 4= x = x = x = = 14 feet.
16 ÷ = ÷ = x = = which is more than 4 shelves!

3. Each DVD case is in wide.
If Joe has 80 DVD’s, how many will fit on one shelf?
You can divide the length of the shelf(in inches) by the width of the DVD.
Each shelf was ft. long. How many inches is this? 3 x12= (half a foot) = 6 inches. The total length of the shelf is 42 inches.
42 ÷ = x = =
Can you really have of a DVD? No! You can put 74 on a shelf. The other 6 would have to go on another shelf!

4. How wide would the DVD case have to be in order for all 80 to fit on one shelf?
Take the length of the shelf in inches and divide by 80!
The shelf was 42 inches, so ÷ by 80.
42 ÷ 80= ÷ = x = x = in.
To change to feet, x by ! x = x 1 4 = ft.
