2 Unit 2/#1 9/17 In what ways has technology expanded knowledge?
Answer in reference to 2 AOKs

3 In what ways has technology affected how much we value the different ways of knowing?
To what extent do these technologies determine what we regard as valuable or important? Class Discussion

4 Class Discussion Could the increasing global dominance of a particular form of information technology (Smart phones) gives rise to an increasing uniformity of thinking?

5 “The real danger is not that computers will begin to think like men, but that men will begin to think like computers” - Sydney Harris

6 Objectives 1. Determine which type of knowledge gives you a more reliable view of your world 2. Analyze and create solid Knowledge Questions

9 Allegory of the Cave

10 Allegory of the Cave

11 Class Discussion In what way does Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave connect with the ToK framework? Allegory: a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.

12 The Allegory of the Cave
The Allegory presents, in brief form, most of Plato's major philosophical assumptions: his belief that the world revealed by our senses is not the real world but only a poor copy of it. The real world can only be apprehended intellectually. His idea that knowledge cannot be transferred from teacher to student, but rather that education consists in directing student's minds toward what is real and important and allowing them to apprehend it for themselves. The Allegory of the Cave

21 Which One Is More Reliable?

22 Truman Show Ignorance is bliss

23  The Truman Show 1. Truman is “on the air, unaware.” Is ignorance bliss?  2. What parallels do you notice between Truman’s imprisonment in the Seahaven dome and the denizens of Plato’s cave?

24 KQ To what extent are we all being duped by product placements and false realities presented to us by commercial advertising and news media?  What are the essential differences between the Truman predicament and our own?

25 Concluding Allegory of the Cave
Relate the Allegory of the Cave to YOUR life OR The Truman Show Try to formulate a KQ

26 AOK- The Arts Mumford and Sons

27 There’s not a “right” KQ but rather a “GOOD” KQ

28

29 Knowledge Question Success Criteria
Is it open-ended - not yes or no? Is it JUICY? Is it about knowledge and not in an overly specific subject such as science, human sciences or ethics? Does it integrate ToK vocabulary such as belief, certainty, culture, evidence, information, experience, explanation, interpretation, intuition, justification, truth, values and the ways of knowing and areas of knowledge? Is it precise about the concepts so that it makes sense as a question?

30 Exit Ticket Create a knowledge question relating to Allegory of the Cave and the Truman show

31 Knowledge Questions Must be open and about knowledge Comparative
Expressed in TOK vocab

32 Step 1 Good Questions Start with To what extent…? How far….? How....?
What role does....? Under what circumstances...? How can....?

33 Step 2 After the question starter use a combination of one or more TOK concepts (Belief, Idea, Empiricism, Rationalism, Certainty, Reliability, Valid, or any other IB subject concepts)

34 Step 3 Add references to ways of knowing and or areas of knowledge

35 Bring It All Together What roles does reason and emotions play in the reliability of scientific claims? To What extent can imagination be considered a valid source of knowledge? How far does art influence beliefs of individuals and groups?
