1 Multicellular Organisms Fungi
Section 2.4

2 Fungi Most are decomposers Heterotrophs
Break down complex carbon compounds, absorb nutrients and leave simpler compounds behind Heterotrophs Decompose dead organisms Decompose materials left behind (skin, leaves , animal droppings)

3 Fungi Most are multicellular (yeast is not)
Cells have nucleus and thick cell wall Do not have tissues or organs

4 Fungi are made of Hyphae - a network of threadlike cells
Form a mass called mycelium Release enzymes to digest material and then absorb it

5 Reproduction Reproductive body produces the spores
Spores can be produced sexually or asexually Spores are released into the air and can travel great distances Can reproduce asexually Hyphae break off Cell division or budding (yeast)

6 Forms of Fungi Mushrooms Molds Mostly under ground
Part we eat produces spores Some are poisonous Molds Fuzzy growth Not all are bad (penicillin, cheese) Disease (athlete’s foot, Dutch elm)

7 Forms of Fungus Yeast Lichen Single celled fungi Can cause disease
Can be used in food (bread) Lichen Algae and fungus that live together. Each makes food for the other
