1 Mobile Internet devices 4 perspectives

2 Mobile Internet “devices”: industry perspective:
Wi-Fi in notebook PCs: 5 years (00-04) 3G in notebook PCs: 5 years (04-08) Wi-Fi in cameras: 5 years (04-08) % Wireless Penetration 100% % Wireless Penetration % Wireless Penetration 100% 100% 90% 90% 90% 80% 80% 80% 70% 70% 70% 60% 60% 60% 50% 50% 50% 40% 40% 40% 30% 30% 30% 20% 20% 20% 10% 10% 10% 0% - 0% - 0% - 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 Result: great success Result: very modest success Result: very modest success ? ? Why? Why? Why? Low chipset cost High chipset cost Relatively high chipset cost (BOM/ASP) Global standard Network operator fragmentation: HW, FW, certification Network operator fragmentation: network entry, configuration Growing availability of network where PCs are used High service pricing Lack of network where cameras are used Affordable service pricing User experience difficulty: screen size, input complications

3 Mobile Internet: customer perspective
applications devices work settings home In between play I want to- …be productive I want to- communicate I want to- …learn connection? use cases I want to …play I want to- …be entertained

4 Mobile Internet: Network perspectives
Wireline WiFi WiMAX 3G Satellite Mobility None limited Most places an urban person goes Nearly all places people go All places with line of site to satellites Speeds great Great Good Good down, bad up Service costs Expensive Can be expensive Breadth of devices Very good->great Phones+ Cost to embed Not much Much Very much Openness of devices Open Closed Bottom line, before WiMAX, Mobile Internet Devices were: Relatively expensive data plans with OK speed, usually on a phone where the user experience is controlled by the carrier, and locked in a contract, or A “nomadic” experience, moving from hot-spot to hot spot With WiMAX, all device OEMs have the opportunity to infuse mobile internet connectivity into their devices, at broadband speeds, at prices their customers can afford

5 Mobile Internet: Application perspective
Gtalk is a good example of application built upon opportunity of that come with a true Mobile Internet: Users who seek to talk to others are not trapped to limitations of landlines or cellphones Application, NOT the device, is the primary tool to serve customer’s needs Allows the user to select AND CHANGE the device that’s appropriate Allows the user to select AND CHANGE the setting But, to take advantage of the ability to roam this functionality across devices – they must be connected! I want to- communicate application devices settings home play work In between Which applications will benefit from Mobile Internet? Data is time sensitive Application is part of the user’s identity, lifestyle Data is valuable to the user: emotionally, financially Application often works better for user on something OTHER a phone

6 Mobile Internet: Device perspective
What makes a good MID: does at least one or two things VERY well, which solve a user’s problem. Fits into the user’s lifestyle Allows the user to interact with the applications they use, now and in the future, in a way that’s better than how those applications are currently used Allows the user to decide which applications they’d like to use, and even how Interacts well with the other devices a user owns or uses Have an affordable device price Have a very affordable monthly price What are the device characteristics if a successful MID?

7 Thank you! Questions?
