5 Assassination: the spark that led to war The Emperor of Austria-Hungary was 84. His heir was Archduke Franz Ferdinand. On 28 June 1914 the Archduke and his wife visited Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. So did a group of Bosnian revolutionaries ready to die to free their people from Austria-Hungary. They had been trained in Serbia. That morning one revolutionary threw a bomb at the royal car. It injured an officer. Later the Archduke and his wife went to visit him in hospital. Their driver lost his way in a narrow street. By chance, one of the plotters Cavrilo Princip, was nearby. He shot and killed the Archduke and his wife.
