My goal is to make a water saving device for my vegetable garden. I have been using a garden hose with tap water to water my vegetables. With this device, hopefully I am able to use less tap water and more recycle grey water. The materials I used were a plastic box, some Blu Tack, some masking tape, 5 straws, a needle and some wood for a wooden frame. The steps involved in building my device: Firstly, I secured a plastic box to a wooden frame near my vegetable garden. Then I drilled a small hole through the bottom of the box (slight bigger than the straw). I then attached the straw to the hole under the box with some Blu Tack. Another 4 straws were used to make the pipes longer. I poked a few holes in the straws with a needle. Connected the straws with some masking tape. The grey water that I collected goes into the box, water runs down the straws through the holes and into my vegetable patch.

After the visit to CERES, I picked up a new idea regarding watering my vegetables. Instead of watering the top of the soil, I can also insert some pipes under the soil so the roots of the vegetables can absorb the water. It slows down the evaporation process.
