Presentation on theme: "WP5 High-Performance Computing Overview"— Presentation transcript:

1 WP5 High-Performance Computing Overview
Helmut Neukirchen (UICE), Shuting Yang (DMI), Thomas Zwinger (CSC)

2 WP5 Subtasks Workflows/Coupling (UICE), Focus on ESM (DMI),
Porting/Optimization (CSC). 2

3 WP5 General approach Most WP5 work is rather service on demand:
Many partners using HPC/eScience in different aspects. Consulting and collaborating role. We are not aware of your HPC/eScience problems in your WPs: please contact us! Transfer of know-how: visits, training (WP6), Synergies, for instance across ESM’s (WP4), Build on existing concepts. 3

4 Need to improve collaboration between WPs
For porting/optimisation of code, visualisation: Contact Thomas CSC. If you have use cases for scientific workflow tools (=couple existing tools together, start and monitor remote jobs, restarts crashed jobs, join results/copy results between different HPC clusters): Contact Helmut Uni Iceland. 4

5 UICE in WP5: Workflows/Coupling
Continuing research on coupling Glaciology models. Based on 2016 presentation in Stockholm: continuation of SVALI work by Dorotheé Vallot (Uni Uppsala) and Thomas Zwinger (CSC). More in presentation by Shahbaz Memon to follow. Outlook: Intended to apply for Dellingr resources for Glacialogy workflow. See following NeIC presentation for Dellingr and more. eSTICC use case presented at NeIC meeting next week. FLEXPART workflows? Machine learning workflows together with Hannele Korhonen and Antti Lipponen from Finnish Meteorological Institute? 5

6 UICE in WP5: Publications with eSTICC attribution
Shahbaz Memon, Dorothée Vallot, Thomas Zwinger, and Helmut Neukirchen: Coupling of a continuum ice sheet model and a discrete element calving model using a scientific workflow system, Geophysical Research Abstracts, Vol. 19, EGU , EGU General Assembly 2017. Shahbaz Memon, Gabriele Cavallaro, Morris Riedel, Helmut Neukirchen: Facilitating efficient data analysis of remotely sensed images using standards-based parameter sweep models, IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), IEEE 2017. Shahbaz Memon, Morris Riedel, Andrew Grimshaw, Helmut Neukirchen, Matthias Book, Peter Kascuk, Márton István, Ákos Hajnal and Daniel Dougherty: Enabling Scientific Workflow and Gateways using the standards-based XSEDE Architecture, 7th IEEE International Conference on Information & Communication Technologies (ICICT) 2017, IEEE 2017 6

7 CSC in WP5: Optimization
Started to plan for cooperation with MetNor/Bergen for optimizations in NorESM2/CAM: CSC earlier managed to significantly increase the speed of idealized lookup tables (Alf Grini). CSC involved in Intel Parallel Computing Center: Porting and Optimization work done for Elmer on MICs (Many Integrated Core). First hands on new CPU generation.

8 CSC in WP5: Publications

9 WP5 Highlights Key contribution of WP5:
Enabled resource-intensive climate modelling that would not have been possible without WP5’s HPC porting & optimisation! 9

10 Presentations in this WP5 session (10:40-12:20)
