How can simulation boost the industry productivity in design and innovation stages ? Cécile Goffaux Energy & Buildings Team Leader at Cenaero cecile.goffaux@cenaero.be

RESEARCH TOPICS Mission To develop and provide methodologies and simulation tools to innovative companies in their design of more competitive products

RESEARCH TOPICS Cenaero – Research center Turbomachinery multidisciplinary design Turbomachinery advanced aerodynamics Composite structures & processes Metallic structure & processes Biomedical engineering Energy and buildings HPC services Manufacturing process modelling Computational Fluid Dynamics Fracture mechanics Multidisciplinary Optimization High Perfomance Computing Applied Mathematics Finite Element Analysis Aerodynamics Composite manufacturing

COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES Morfeo Minamo Argo Hea-P Cenaero – Research center 15 FP7 & 15 Regional projects. 4 software products.

COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES Composite lab for prototyping & tests Ultrasound inspection Ovens, Machining center,…Cutting table Tier-1 supercomputer 10,000+ cores to be installed in 2013

RESULTS Simulations and productivity Boost the Innovation Reduce time to market by achieving a quick concept exploration Reduce the cost of the design stage  Trade-off to find btw simulation & experiment on demonstrator (ex. Wind tunnel) Provide solutions in diagnostic Reconstruct and understand known events by reverse analysis Identify the key parameters in multi-physics issues

RESULTS Simulations and productivity Optimise and guide the decision Technical/Economic optimisation Incremental/parametric process to identify the key parameters/phenomena  Predict future or unobserved situations  Improve the current situation Norms requirement check & product certification

RESULTS Boost innovation: TiO2 coating efficiency assessment 1.Extract the key parameters for product development 2.Tests KO → CFD/multi-physics with local effects

OUTLOOK Diagnostic: a production line of basalt fibers 1.Prevent damage to the production line (basalt solidification) 2.Advices for the adaptation of the production line to boost the line productivity CFD expertise (free surface flow and thermal transfers) Electro-magnetic analysis of the electrode effects Streamline of the molten basalt in the refiner (Colors represents temperature)

CONTACT Optimise: a welding sequence 4 welding beads to study the influence of the weld sequence Definition of the problem Specification of the sequences Optimise the displacements & residual stresses Comparison of all sequences

CONTACT Local reinforcement around rivets: Composite reinforcement by compression Metalic reinforcement  Mass reduction (less rivets)  Performances improvment Optimise: a composite assembly

CONTACT Optimise: Mass & performance of grooved heat pipes (satellite thermal management) Optimised designs

CONTACT A step to certification: Multi-physics stent design in the Biomedical Sector 3D stent mechanical design Blood flow impact assessment Respect of norms requirements in terms of “state-of-the art” modeling … towards certification (ex. FDA)

CONTACT A step to certification: Smoke exhaust system efficiency assessment for fire safety 3D CFD & thermal simulations with smoke diffusion Respect of norms requirements in terms of “state-of-the art” modeling … towards certification
