3 Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) A system of laws to regulate the stock market and prevent fraud. All financial information had to be disclosed to the SEC. SEC still regulates the Stock Market.

4 Emergency Banking Act (EBA) Allowed the government to assess the stability of banks to decide which banks should stay open Designed to restore faith in the economy Subject of FDR’s first “fireside chat”

5 Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Government insured savings up to $5000.00 Government guaranteed bank deposits to restore faith in the banks. Today deposits are insured up to $100,000

6 Federal Emergency Relief Act (FERA) Provided $500 million for food distribution and cash payments. Bought excess agricultural products from farmers. Basis of modern day welfare. Provided direct relief!

7 Social Security Act Created a national system of pensions for the elderly and unemployment compensation for people who lost their jobs. The 1 st payment was 12 cents. Program still exists today.

8 Jobs Programs Works Progress Administration (WPA) employed workers in construction jobs. Ex. Roads, bridges, schools. Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) employed young men in outdoor environmental work especially in National Parks.

9 Jobs Programs Federal Arts Project (FAP) employed artists, actors, dancers and historians. National Youth Administration (NYA) provided young people with job training and educational scholarships

10 Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) Adjusted production to match consumption. Paid farmers to destroy crops and livestock to raise prices. Farmers still received some subsidies.

11 National Labor Relations Act (Wagner Act) (NLRA) Workers have the legal right to form labor unions and bargain collectively. Union membership skyrocketed. Unions still exist, but membership has dwindled.

12 Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Built hydroelectric dams throughout the country. Still the nations largest power supplier. Brought electricity to rural America.

13 National Recovery Administration (NRA) Created by the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) Worked with businesses to regulate quality, production levels, prices, work hours, and wages Had no enforcement power Often put small business owners at a disadvantage so it was not universally popular
