Andrew Jackson first gained attention as a young courier (only 12 when he enlisted) in the Revolutionary War Jackson gained even more fame for his victory in the Battle of New Orleans at the end of the War of 1812 Consistent conflict with native groups of the southeastern U.S. planted the seeds for Jackson’s attitude towards American Indians Earned the nickname “Old Hickory” for his toughness and appeal to the common man Young Andrew Jackson

3 Jackson and the election of 1824
Jackson’s early political career combined with his military success led him to be nominated for President in with John Quincy Adams as his chief rival Despite the fact that Jackson won both the most electoral and popular votes, he would be denied the presidency due to a “Corrupt Bargain” between Adams and Speaker of the House Henry Clay John Quincy Adams (above) and Henry Clay (right) would be accused of the “Corrupt Bargain” which granted Adams the presidency in 1824

Jackson as president Andrew Jackson would be redeemed in the Election of 1828 by establishing a new political party, the Democrats, and riding his popularity with the common man to the presidency due to universal white male suffrage Jackson would enter office and immediately institute the “spoils system” where he would grant important political appointments to his supporters Jackson also faced a nullification crisis in South Carolina due to government tariffs which he was forced to act upon President Andrew Jackson

5 Jackson’s war on the national bank
Andrew Jackson had long distrusted the Second Bank of the United States (BUS) due to its monopolistic nature and his feeling that too much power was in the hands of too few people Jackson would veto the BUS’s recharter and withdraw all funds, placing federal deposits into state banks nicknamed “pet banks” Jackson’s battles with Nicholas Biddle would result in the BUS failing and bring about financial crisis to the United States Cartoon depicting Andrew Jackson fighting the BUS. Nicholas Biddle is the large head in the middle, and Martin Van Buren is assisting
