5 THE AUTHOR Navarre Scott Momaday was born on Feb. 27, 1934 in Lawton, Oklahoma.

6 He spent the first year of his life at his grandparents' home on the Kiowa Indian reservation, where his father was born and raised. When he was one year old, Scott's parents moved to Arizona. His father was a painter. His mother, who is of English and Cherokee descent, became an author of children's books. Both worked as teachers on Indian reservations when Scott was growing up, and the boy was exposed not only to the Kiowa traditions of his father's family but to the Navajo, Apache and Pueblo Indian cultures of the Southwest.

7 Facts about the Author:
He’s a graduate of the University of Mexico and Stanford University (Ph.D). His 1st novel, House Made of Dawn, earned him his Pulitzer Prize in Fiction in 1963. He taught at the University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, and the University of Arizona. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts, "for his writings and his work that celebrate and preserve Native American art and oral tradition“ in 2007 by then President Bush.
