THE WOLF OF WALL STREET Textual Analysis
Crime Genre

A typical setting of a crime film, is in a busy city and as seen in the trailer, its set in New York This highlights the dark secret places of the criminal world. Also because in this location you typically see high end clubs, houses and such where criminals may lurk and work. It also emphasises the accent of the characters which is an American/ New York. In terms of props we see high end expensive ‘flash’ cars which reflect the characters and what they have possibly done to have the car (committed crimes). Its also signifies their of high status and has a high profile not only to he audience but to the other characters in the film, and can suggest how high up a character is in a heist.

The locations seen in the trailer are grand ones, high profile places, including exotic locations- such as on the boat, this is a postmodern aspect as it glorifying criminals violent life's and suggesting this criminal activity is a good thing as these locations are of result of it. In addition in the film there are a lot of drug dealers which imply a great amount of money can be earnt from it, so the grand house and private boat suggest some of the criminal offenses the character have committed. The prop of money is commonly found within the crime genre, piles of cash is featured throughout the film implying the dodgy violent, criminal type work characters may of carried out to receive the cash.

There’s a character featured in the film which fits the meta narrative- there's a female character who is presented to be quit a strong character an at some points ‘dominates’ the male character. She is also shown as an intelligent character, who knows how to fool other characters to get what she wants. However she is also perceived as a ‘show wife’ of the main character being the typical glamorous girl, wearing dresses and is petite with blonde hair. Guns are featured in the trailer, highlighting violence and the sort of characters that are related with violence. Guns are a typical prop in crime films as they mean danger.

The characters of ‘ buddies’ are featured in the trailer, who all work together, looking out for each other and helping protect each other from possible violence. They are all caught up in some dangers, and work together to help provide for themselves, buddies are commonly seen in crime films. Also typically seen is the costume of suits, nearly all the characters shown in the film are wearing suits or smart clothes of some sort- suggesting the glam side of crime. Other types of characters seen in the film which are the expected crime film character are ‘good cops’ these are the policemen that are trustworthy and what the audience would expect the audience to see. Trying to overcome the crime and the offences committed by some of the more violent dangerous characters. ‘Henchmen’ characters are apparent in the film, who threaten people on behalf of higher characters there physically strong, who work joint as a team with other dangerous people.
