What is Philosophy? “Philosophy comes from the Greek word meaning ‘the love of knowledge’. It is the branch of knowledge devoted to the examination of basic concepts such as truth, existence, reality, cause and freedom.” NB. Socrates is seen as the founding father of Western philosophy. He was forced by the Greek authorities to drink hemlock (poison) because he taught young people to think for themselves.

What is Philosophy? ‘Big Questions’ are questions that can’t be easily answered and don’t have evidence to back up any answers that are given. Try answering some of these: Why are we here? Did someone or something create the universe? Why are there good and bad things in life? Why do some people suffer more than others? What happens next? Add two of your own ‘Big Questions’

This means that an experiment can be tried out over and over again and always leads to the same end result, which can be observed using our senses. - Can you think of a couple of examples? - How reliable is scientific truth?

This is the sort of truth based on evidence from books or archaeology that shows what actually happened in the past. - Can you think of a couple of examples? - How reliable is historical truth?

This is where people believe that they ‘know’ whether something is right or wrong although there is not necessarily evidence to prove it. - Can you think of a couple of examples? - How reliable is moral truth?

This is when something which people read such as a novel or see in a picture or film seems true to them in the sense that it is how things are or represents the way in which people really behave. - Can you think of a couple of examples? - How reliable is artistic/aesthetical truth? “It is not realistic, maybe, but art doesn't have to be realistic. Romeo and Juliet is not realistic, but it is true; it shows the essence of falling in love.” (Jan Harlan - Film Producer)

People follow that religion because they believe they can discover the truth about life that comes from God. - Can you think of a couple of examples? - How reliable is spiritual truth?
