1 Celebrating Student Success
Design Question 1 – Element 3: How do teachers provide their students with recognition of their current status and their knowledge gain relative to the learning goal?

2 Desired Effect in the Students
The desired effect is, “The students feel pride in their knowledge gains and accomplishments and students are motivated to continue progress toward a goal.” To receive an Innovating rating, the teacher must monitor and make accommodations so that every student in their classroom achieves this desired effect.

3 An Important Note While every teacher is probably going to great lengths to recognize and celebrate the academic successes that students experience, this element is specifically related to celebrating the progress students make on a specific learning goal and scale. You will only experience success with this particular element if you have already written and used a specific learning goal and scale to track student progress.

4 Review Teacher and Student Evidence

5 Review Scale for Element 3

6 Task Watch the video on the following slide. Notice the strategies this teacher has utilized to celebrate student success with regard to gains in knowledge as outlined by a learning goal and scale both individually and as a group. An analysis of where this teacher would rate according to the provided learning goal and scale follows the video.

7 Watch Please click on the link to view a video from Pasco County Schools about Design Question 1, Element 3: Celebrating Student Success.

8 Review Teacher and Student Evidence What did you see?

9 Review Teacher and Student Evidence What did we see?

10 Analysis Teacher Evidence
The teacher acknowledged students who have made gains in their knowledge and skill relative to the learning goal. During individual interviews the teacher questions students to determine their status on the scale. She then verbally praises and physically celebrates (high five) the student’s progress. The teacher acknowledges and celebrates the final status and progress of the entire class. After taking a status of the class that included where they were on the scale yesterday and where they are now, the teacher exclaims, “Awesome! I see lots of people changing. That makes me so happy!” The teacher uses a variety of ways to celebrate success. Verbal Praise ex. “I’m so proud of you!” High Five, Smiling

11 Analysis continued… Student Evidence
The students show signs of pride relative to their accomplishments in the class. Once the students has demonstrated a certain level of achievement on the scale, pride is evidenced through physical changes such as smiling. They are also quick to move their magnet up on the scale located on the wall. When asked students say they want to continue to make progress. While the students are not directly asked this question, their desire to continue to make progress is evidenced when they create a plan for reaching the next level on the scale.

12 Review Scale for Element 3 What would you rate the teacher?

13 Analysis Continued… What did we rate the teacher?
Overall Rating: Applying This teacher achieved an overall rating of Applying. Both individually and as a whole class the instructor acknowledged each student’s current rating on the scale as well as knowledge gained. Additionally, this teacher is monitoring the students for motivation to continue to make progress by asking each one about his or her plan to achieve the next level on the scale.

14 Analysis Continued… Why is the overall rating NOT Innovating?
According to the scale for element 3 a teacher is considered Innovating if he or she, “adapts and creates new strategies for unique student needs and situations in order for the desired effect to be evident in all students. This is difficult to discern based on the evidence in the video. The good news is, your evaluator will be able to move about your entire classroom while observing and even question students to determine whether or not they are all able to rate them selves according to the scale and take part in a celebration of progress.

15 Practice Use this video to identify the student and teacher evidence. Then use the scale to rate the teacher for element three.

18 Analysis Teacher Evidence – you can only give credit for what you see.
The teacher acknowledges students who have achieved a certain level on the scale or rubric. After reviewing the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve a level 2 on the scale, the teacher read the names of students who achieved that level. After each name was read the students clapped and cheered. The teacher acknowledges and celebrates the final status and progress of the entire class. After praising individual students made progress on the scale, the teacher had a genius circle graph that she could rotate to demonstrate the percentage of the class that had achieved a level 2 on the scale. Teacher uses a variety of ways to celebrate success. The teacher called the names of the students who progressed to a level 2 on the scale. Each student received a round of applause from the class.

19 Analysis Continued… Student Evidence – you can only give credit for what you see. Students show signs of pride regarding their accomplishments in the class. The students cheered for one other and demonstrated broad smiles as their individual names were announced. When the teacher showed that 79% of the students in the class were at a level 2 on the scale, the students gasped with pride and happiness at this achievement.

20 Review Scale for Element 3 What would you rate the teacher?

21 Analysis Continued… Overall Rating
Based on the evidence found in the video, the overall rating for this teacher for element three is Developing. She clearly provides students with recognition of their current status and knowledge gain relative to the learning goal. She monitors every student with regard to their progress on the learning goal and celebrates accordingly.

22 Analysis Continued… Why is this teacher NOT considered Applying.
The evidence that is lacking is a clear indication that the teacher monitors for evidence of the extent to which the majority of students are motivated to enhance their status. In the previous video we witnessed the teacher interviewing each student as to how they could achieve the next level on the scale. This teacher reads the next level to students and tells them what skills they will need. A simple way to gauge student motivation might be to have students list their goal and a way or ways to achieve it on an exit ticket.

23 Is this element in your PGP?
Sign into Click on the Growth tab and then click on the Plans option. Open your current plan and fill out a new Reflection Log, answering all of the questions. Now decide how you will change your teaching as a result of viewing this module. After you initiate your change you will need to reflect on its impact and then fill out another Reflection Log.
