Work breakdown structures are useful in determining the order in which tasks must be completed
These structures outline what needs to be completed before another task can begin
The structure serves as a visual interpretation of your schedule
A detailed description is found in Smith’s “Project Management and Teamwork,” p.66
Also, students had to use this structure in the Bike Lab in 181 last quarter.

Look at the syllabus to see what your weekly assignments will be
These assignments will help to develop a timeline for your group
Work backwards from these assignment due dates

Start with what major assignment or task needs to be completed for each week of the quarter
Then use your list of smaller tasks to fill in what needs to be done each day
Decide which tasks must be completed before another phase of your project is started and allow for that time

This example shows that there are 3 major tasks to be comleted before the project is finished. However, it also shows that tasks 1 & 2 are broken down into smaller tasks which must be comleted before task 3 is even began. The stucture also illustrates that tasks one and two are independent of each other, but both tasks as well as the smaller tasks they are broken down into, must be comleted before Task 3.
